Highgate performance impressions

On 6th September 2009 World of Sevdah was a featured guest at Songlines International Choir performance at Highgate United Reformed Church.

Mirza Basic performed with his mother Nasiha three Sevdah songs for intently listening audience of around 50 listeners.

The songs were: ‘Sejdefu majka budila’, ‘Moj dilbere kud se seces’ and ‘Oj’ golube moj golube’.

Mirza performed the backings on an accordion, while Nasiha sung the lead melody.

At the end some of the audience members were touching to the point and the applause received from the audience was incredibly loud.

Mirza and Nasiha received many praises afterwards too.

Some of the comments were: ‘you are delicious’ and ‘incredibly expressive performance’.

This authentic combination of accordion and solo voice was also recognised by a world class, accomplished violinist Ruth Waterman who specifically approached Mirza to say: ‘You are very authentic! Well done on playing so well.’

Ruth also gave a talk about her book ‘When swan lake comes to Sarajevo’ and shared her positive impressions of Bosnia, where she goes for regular annual visits since 2002.
